“Details make the design,” as Charles Eames once said. There are a myriad of details that make a room unique.
The best rooms speak to the people inhabiting them; they reflect the aesthetic of the times while conveying the sometimes elusive quality of timelessness.
The best rooms provide real visual and physical comfort. Most importantly, the best rooms are centered around key design elements.
SPRUCE spoke with several local designers about what timeless spaces – and the details that shape them – hold the most meaning for them.
Today, we feature Jenny Martin of Jenny Martin Design.
Jenny’s designs fuse utility with beauty, simplicity with elegance, and quality with function. Her focus is on timeless style, natural materials and a clean, current aesthetic.
In 2012 Jenny was awarded Western Living’s “One to Watch,” and she and her team have continued to receive accolades for their elegant, enduring homes, including a Georgie Award (CHBABC), multiple Care Awards (VRBA) and recognition at the International Design and Architectural Awards in London.
She says “kitchens hold strong as our favourite room to design. The heart of the home, beautiful kitchens encourage new experiences, satisfy workflow and are the foundation for joy-filled memories with family and friends. Seamlessly merging function and beauty is the primary objective when we design kitchens, and the belief that the connection you have with your home can positively influence the way you live is a driving factor, and integral, to all of the spaces we create.
For Maison de Lee, a kitchen inspired by an enriched culinary experience was the inspiration behind its fairytale interior. Capturing the pure authenticity of a traditional French bistro, this custom-build integrated honed marble countertops, a feature hood fan and classical elements with an aged vintage quality to exhibit a stunning marriage of styles. A dream to create, this space remains one of our favourite designs both conceptually and in execution.”
